Business shifts rarely happen one at a time.
A new strategy may come alongside restructuring. Growth may require new capabilities and different ways of working. AI may change processes, roles, and customer expectations, all while leaders are still expected to deliver results.
The strategy can change quickly. The organization usually takes longer to catch up.
That gap is where execution starts to break down.
Leaders may be moving in slightly different directions. Teams are unsure which priorities take precedence. Processes still support the old way of working. Decisions take longer because ownership isn’t clear. People keep doing what worked before because no one has translated the new direction into what needs to change day to day.
I’ve seen this throughout my corporate career and in my work with organizations navigating significant transformation.
The challenge often isn’t a lack of strategy or commitment.
Alignment is your greatest challenge and opportunity.
When the business shifts, leaders have to intentionally realign four things:
1. Leadership
Are we aligned on the direction, priorities, and decisions that matter most?
2. Strategy
Is there clarity about what we are trying to accomplish now and the tradeoffs that come with it?
3. Operations
Do our processes, resources, decision rights, and ways of working support where we’re going?
4. Teams
Do people understand what the shift means for their work and how they need to work differently together?
These elements are deeply connected. When one lags behind, execution gets harder.
That alignment directly affects how well the organization performs and executes.
As the pace of business continues to accelerate, leaders can’t wait for the organization to eventually catch up with the strategy.
The ability to realign quickly is your competitive advantage.
When your business shifts, how quickly can your organization shift with it?
