As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we honor and recognize the many women who have given so much to provide opportunity for American women today. We often recall the significant, defining accomplishments in our history….Women’s Suffrage, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment. We owe so much to the women who paved the way.
We also want to remember the women who were working quietly behind the scenes, making significant contributions in their respective fields, while persevering through their personal challenges for equality in society and in the workplace.
I’m reminded of my own mother, who went to work when I, her youngest child, was a toddler. Her work with Head Start opened the world of educational opportunity to so many children. She was ambitious, having gone back to school to earn her degree and working hard to advance to a teacher position. She was passionate about her work and touched so many lives through her love for the children and families she served in Head Start, in her church, and in the community. She is an example that has inspired me in my life and work.
You, too, have the opportunity to be that example of a woman who is making an impact wherever you work, live and serve. But, you might fail to see your value. You’re so busy as a working woman, running to keep up with all the roles you play – mother, taxi driver, chef, caretaker, volunteer and work on top of that!
